Rates up, markets down: a day that changed the mood

The RBI raised its policy rate by 25 basis points on Wednesday — the first increase in nearly four years — and the market did not take it well. The Sensex closed 458.91 points lower at 72,608.90, down 0.63%, and the Nifty 50 fell 0.76% to 22,603.05. Only a handful of sectors held up, with telecom and a few large banks the rare bright spots, while metals and realty led the decline.

The rupee weakened past 96 to the dollar, and gold pushed back toward ₹1.50 lakh per 10 grams as investors reached for something that does not move with interest-rate expectations. Foreign investors have been net sellers through the month, and domestic institutions have been absorbing that supply.

Why this matters to you: a rate hike is not just a number for traders. It nudges up loan EMIs over time, can cool down equity valuations, and quietly changes what a fixed deposit or debt fund yields. If you run a SIP, none of this changes what you should do next month — but it does change the arithmetic behind your home loan.

Bullion figures are the India-wide benchmark reading; a city price adds the local dealer premium, and retail jewellery adds making charges and 3% GST on top.

How to read this page

A daily market page is not a signal to act. The useful habit is to look at three things only: the direction of the index over weeks rather than hours, whether foreign money is buying or selling, and whether anything changed in interest rates or inflation. Everything else is noise dressed up as news. If you want the numbers without the drama, this page is for you — and every figure here is checked before it is published.
